Nanotechnology for sustainability

Nanotechnology can make a considerable contribution to sustainable development through its combination of economic, ecological and social benefits. Alongside enormous economic potential, it creates jobs and can help reduce environmental impact.

Sustainable development means balancing economic, ecological and social requirements in order to meet present needs without restricting the opportunities available to future generations. In keeping with this, responsible handling of new technologies such as nanotechnology is integral to Evonik’s corporate philosophy.

This is set out in its nanotechnology policy, which states: "As with all our other products, we produce and market nanomaterials only if the latest available research shows they can be manufactured and applied in a safe and environmentally compatible manner." The company is continually expanding its knowledge base by working with leading research institutes and through its involvement in national and international research projects.
