NanoCare broadens the knowledge base

Evonik played a role in shaping the content and focus of the government-funded NanoCare project in Germany, which published its concluding report in mid-2009. For this project, Evonik provided well-researched comparative materials on titanium dioxide, carbon blacks and new materials such as zirconium dioxide, ceroxide, oxide blends and various novel, surface-modified particles.

In Evonik’s view the findings of the NanoCare project show that, based on a comparison with the comparative materials for which a broad data base is available, no additional safety precautions are required for the new materials investigated.

The NanoCare publications show that more detailed toxicological investigations were carried out on eleven nanomaterials. Thresholds below which no toxicological effects were identified have been defined for almost all of the materials investigated. Moreover, the methods used in the NanoCare project did not identify any penetration of cell barriers such as the air-blood barrier in the lungs.

In addition, the NanoCare project conducted measurements in a total of eleven facilities which produce, package and process nanomaterials. No significant increase in the concentration of nanoparticles, aggregates or agglomerates measuring less than 400 nm was found at any of these workplaces. This indicates that at the facilities investigated there was no significant increase in exposure to nanoparticles.
