Selective studies on fumed silicas

Evonik produces nanostructured silicas for a variety of applications. All the synthetic silicas produced by Evonik are amorphous rather than crystalline. According to the data available, synthetic amorphous silicas do not represent a health hazard, providing the applicable thresholds are observed.

None of the synthetic amorphous silicas investigated in inhalation studies resulted in permanent changes to the lung or progressive damage comparable to silicosis (dust lung), which can be caused by exposure to crystalline particulates. Epidemiological studies of employees with long-term exposure have not shown any indications of silicosis, nor do the available data indicate any other respiratory diseases.

Evonik has produced an overview of the results of these studies and investigations of amorphous silicas in the workplace. The company supports selective, meaningful investigations to examine the possible health effects of exposure to synthetic amorphous silicas in order to ensure optimal compliance with its duty to protect health.
