New and improved products

Nanomaterials are already used to improve many everyday products or give them completely new properties. For example, Evonik uses the properties of silicas to strengthen elastomers, produce better ink-jet paper and regulate the flow properties of colorants.

Many advantages of nanomaterials are used in automobiles. These include scratch-resistant coatings, fuel-saving tires and reinforced plastics that facilitate the manufacture of lighter, more fuel-efficient cars. Similarly, carbon nanotubes can greatly improve the mechanical and electronic properties of materials.

The miniaturization of electronic appliances and their rising performance require highly integrated chips. The production process includes polishing wafers with liquids containing silicas and ceroxide as polishing agents. Titanium dioxide is an alternative to organic UV filters in modern sunscreens a high protection factor.

The environment also benefits from nanotechnology. One example is SEPARION® technology from Evonik, a key step towards emission-free electric vehicles and large-volume storage technologies for renewable energies.
