Over sixty years experience with AEROSILĀ®

When Harry Kloepfer discovered a method of producing extremely fine silicic acid in 1942, he had no idea that his invention would be start of an extraordinary success story that still continues today.
Silicas

Silicas are used in many applications

Fumed silica, which has been known commercially as AEROSIL® since 1943, is now manufactured in a wide range of variants that are sold to almost a hundred companies around the world.

Kloepfer originally developed fumed silica as an alternative to carbon blacks as a filler in auto tires. The breakthrough came in 1942 when he invented high-temperature hydrolysis, which allows the production of extremely fine silica. In the same year, Degussa - a predecessor of Evonik - obtained its first patent for the process. Industrial production started in 1944.

Continuous development of this product since its introduction has added a wide range of new variants to the product range. Today AEROSIL® is used to optimize the properties of a wide variety of products.
